Green Horse Games: a phased migration to AWS.

CloudHero helped Green Horse Games consolidate workloads from two cloud providers onto AWS. The project combined container and Kubernetes migration with a staged rollout and support through the AWS Migration Acceleration Program.

The challenge

Growth exposed the limits of the existing platform.

For Green Horse Games, infrastructure performance directly affected the experience of people playing its games. As demand grew, a platform split across two cloud providers became harder to scale and maintain.

The customer’s case-study material describes network issues, outages and maintenance windows that required careful coordination. Engineering time spent on infrastructure problems reduced the time available for game development and release improvements.

The migration needed to address the operating environment as well as the hosting location: reliable networking, capacity that could follow demand and a repeatable way to release application changes.

The migration

Prove the approach, then move the remaining workloads.

First phase: migrate part of the platform

Green Horse Games worked with CloudHero to move an initial portion of its workloads to AWS using containers and Kubernetes. This gave the customer experience of the target platform before extending the migration.

Second phase: consolidate on AWS

After the first migration, the team moved the remaining infrastructure. The phased approach allowed the customer to build confidence in the AWS environment while progressing toward a consolidated platform.

Build the platform around the games

Amazon EKS provided the Kubernetes environment, with Amazon EC2 compute and Amazon ElastiCache for in-memory caching. Infrastructure automation and CI/CD improvements supported the development workflow.

Include transition costs in the plan

The approved case-study draft records use of MAP for both migration phases. Support helped mitigate the cost of running parallel infrastructure during the transition. Funding eligibility and allocations depend on each project.

What the customer reported

A more stable platform, with room to scale.

At the time of the case study, Green Horse Games described a more stable environment that could scale with player demand. The customer also reported more efficient resource use and less infrastructure administration, allowing developers to focus on game features and software delivery.

The work extended beyond moving workloads. Infrastructure as code, CI/CD automation and staff training helped make changes more repeatable. The customer also described simpler access to logging, encryption and security controls needed for its platform requirements.

These are outcomes from this engagement. Architecture, transition risk and operating costs need to be assessed for the workloads in a new migration.
